TheJapanese meaning was not considered. Aku Aku was named after a Polynesian restaurant (with, according to developer Dave Baggett, "a giant tiki statue out front and fairly terrible food".) I imagine the restaurant was named after the Easter Island Aku-Aku (a type of ancestral spirit), but I can't prove it.
